A Time of Extraordinary Richness
Author: Patrizia
There are experiences that are difficult to put into words. Not because I have nothing to say, but because it is hard to find words powerful enough to describe everything I experienced and felt. My days in Tanzania were one of those experiences.
My desire to volunteer in Africa had been growing for years, and it finally came true thanks to the Kolajna ljubavi association, which cares for children at St. Anthony’s Orphanage in Songea. I spent my first few days in the northern part of the country, discovering a different way of life and learning about the nature and culture of the Maasai people. Then, upon arriving in Songea, the most special part of my journey began.
My days at the orphanage were filled with many responsibilities, from accompanying the children to school and helping them with their studies to carrying out administrative tasks as part of the child sponsorship programme. Yet, the most beautiful part of everyday life was spending time with the children. Playing, drawing, singing, dancing and laughing, along with those simple moments of closeness, left the deepest impression on me. Every child had their own personality, habits and unique qualities, and it was precisely these differences that I grew to love most about them.
What particularly amazed me about the children was their sense of togetherness. They care for one another, share what they have, help each other and offer comfort when someone is upset. One moment I will always remember is when a little girl offered me half of her waffle, which was already very small to begin with. Despite having so little, she was willing to give away half of what she had. Those are the kinds of things you never forget.
Still, alongside all the beautiful moments, there were also those that saddened me and made me reflect. Poverty, unequal opportunities and everyday injustices are a reality for many people. I often wondered how it is possible that we are all born into the same world, yet live such different lives. If Africa taught me anything, it was gratitude. Gratitude for all the things I so often take for granted — water, food, a home, education, safety and opportunities. That is precisely why I believe it is so important to teach both children and adults empathy, solidarity and an understanding of diversity. This is a message I strive to share through my everyday work as well.
I went to Tanzania to volunteer, to give some of my time, knowledge and love. I returned home with memories, friendships and feelings that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Surrounded by simplicity and material hardship, I discovered an entirely different kind of wealth.
