Young Volunteers, Kolajna, and a Brighter School Courtyard

Young Volunteers, Kolajna, and a Brighter School Courtyard

For one day, the courtyard of the Secondary School Topusko turned into a workshop and a gathering space where it became very clear what young people can achieve when they are given trust, space, and the freedom to take initiative and turn their own ideas into action.

As part of the project Educating Young Volunteers, implemented by Kolajna ljubavi in partnership with this proactive school and co-financed by the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth, students designed and carried out their own volunteer action titled Our Courtyard - in Action.

On April 27th, 2026, from early morning, the school courtyard was transformed into a working space. Old wooden benches were sanded down, layers of old paint were removed, surfaces were prepared for repainting, the greenery and surroundings were carefully maintained and improved.

The benches received a completely new look while the courtyard was further enriched with the planting of a variegated ornamental willow, which will stand for years as a reminder of this meaningful action. In total, 20 young volunteers - students of Secondary School Topusko, took part, supported by 4 adult volunteers and team leaders from Kolajna ljubavi.

An equally important part of the day happened between the brushstrokes. The students worked together, combining their energy and effort to carry the entire project from the initial idea through to completion.

The day unfolded in a warm, relaxed working atmosphere, filled with conversation, music and that simple but powerful feeling of doing something good together.

Once again, this activity within the “Educating Young Volunteers” project shows how much volunteering contributes to developing teamwork, a sense of responsibility and a stronger connection between young people and their community.
